Meet The Blogger: Meet Marina of Broken Down Beauty

Welcome to today's edition of Meet The Blogger! Today's Blogger is Marina of

I'm so jealous of her Instagram! Her pics are sooooooo amazing!

What made you start a blog?

I come from a family of non-makeup-wearing women, and, yet, I'd always been fascinated by cosmetics. While I was working part-time at Sephora, my family would always ask me what I was using on my face or what that certain makeup term meant. They suggested I start writing a blog, since I had too much to say! I began writing a few articles, and then the coworkers at Sephora caught on to it. They loved it! I didn't think that I would have anything to say that a makeup artist or avid lover of beauty wouldn't already know, but my extensive knowledge in science allowed me to provide a unique point of view.

How long have you been blogging?

2.5 years

What would you say makes your blog unique?

First, it's my addition of scientific and business principles that really break down the concepts, products, techniques, and brands within the beauty industry. Cosmetic companies do a great job at confusing consumers and making them think they need to purchase 80 million different products. Wrong! Beauty has such a slew of offerings to suit everyone's specific need, price point, and preference. Just because a product exists doesn't mean you need it!

What's your favorite part of having a blog?

I love interacting with my readers in the comments section on my blog and Instagram. I love having people to geek out with!

Have you ever reviewed a product that has become something you use all the time?

I recently discovered Sun Bum and their amazing collection of sunscreens. I religiously wear sunscreen every day, and I now make sure to wear their High Performance Sunscreen in SPF 50. It blends so well, provides great protection, and doesn't affect my makeup application!

What would you say is the downside of blogging?

Keeping up with it! Some weeks I just don't feel inspired by anything, and it's tough to constantly keep churning out content.

Do you have a least favorite post that you've written?

I think my early posts were WAY too long. I was trying to cram every fact and opinion I had about beauty into each post. I should have written it all out and then divided it into separate, smaller posts. Who can read all that at once?!

What is something you have to have while writing a blog post? Examples music, watching netflix, drinking tea etc.

Peace and quiet! It's hard to write if someone is trying to talk to you or the TV is blaring. I just need time to get my thoughts out.

Do you think your blog has changed over the years?

I think I've developed a stronger, more clear voice as time has progressed.

What was it like when you found out you were getting your first press samples?

Pretty exciting. You feel like you're doing something right, and I always love trying new products!

Are you married? Do you have any kids and/or pets?

Any advice for new bloggers?

Take time to think about your point of difference and voice. What's the overall goal of your blog? How does each piece contribute to that goal?
